سُورَةُ النَّاسِ al-Nās
The second sūrah of seeking refuge, and the last sūrah of the Qurʾān.
The text of al-Nās
A rendering of the meaning in our own plain English. It is not the Qurʾān itself, and not a word-for-word translation.

Āyah 114:1
قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ ٱلنَّاسِ
Qul a-ʿū-dhu bi-rab-bin-nās
Say: I seek protection with the Lord of people,
-
Āyah 114:2
مَلِكِ ٱلنَّاسِ
Ma-li-kin-nās
the King of people,
-
Āyah 114:3
إِلَٰهِ ٱلنَّاسِ
I-lā-hin-nās
the God of people,
-
Āyah 114:4
مِن شَرِّ ٱلْوَسْوَاسِ ٱلْخَنَّاسِ
Min shar-ril-was-wā-sil-khan-nās
from the harm of the whisperer who slinks back,
Al-Ṭabarī: Satan, who whispers and then draws back; when a person remembers their Lord and obeys Him, he slinks away.1
-
Āyah 114:5
ٱلَّذِى يُوَسْوِسُ فِى صُدُورِ ٱلنَّاسِ
Al-la-dhī yu-was-wi-su fī ṣu-dū-rin-nās
who whispers into people’s hearts,
Literally “chests”.
-
Āyah 114:6
مِنَ ٱلْجِنَّةِ وَٱلنَّاسِ
Mi-nal-jin-na-ti wan-nās
whether of the jinn or of humankind.
Al-Ṭabarī reads this as describing the people whispered to, of both jinn and humankind. Ibn Kathīr also reports it as describing the whisperers, devils of both jinn and humankind. This rendering leaves both readings open.2,3
When it is recited
Al-Falaq and al-Nās are the two sūrahs of seeking refuge (al-muʿawwidhatān). The Prophet ﷺ said of them that āyāt had been sent down whose like had never been seen (Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 814). Each night before sleeping he recited them with al-Ikhlāṣ, blew lightly into his cupped hands and wiped them over as much of his body as he could, three times (Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 5017). When he was ill he recited them over himself and blew lightly (al-Bukhārī 5016). He told ʿUqbah ibn ʿĀmir to recite the sūrahs of refuge (al-muʿawwidhāt) after every prayer (Sunan Abī Dāwūd 1523, graded ṣaḥīḥ by al-Albānī; Jāmiʿ al-Tirmidhī 2903, graded ḥasan in the Darussalam edition). And he taught reciting them with al-Ikhlāṣ three times in the evening and in the morning, saying they would be enough for you against everything (Abū Dāwūd 5082, graded ḥasan by al-Albānī; al-Tirmidhī 3575, which al-Tirmidhī graded ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ gharīb).4,5,6,7,8,9,10
