سُورَةُ الإِخۡلَاصِ al-Ikhlāṣ

Sincerity (pure devotion to Allah), Sūrah 112, 4 āyāt

Listen to al-Ikhlāṣ on quran.com

Four short āyāt on who Allah is; the Prophet ﷺ said it equals a third of the Qurʾān.

The text of al-Ikhlāṣ

A rendering of the meaning in our own plain English. It is not the Qurʾān itself, and not a word-for-word translation.

  1. Āyah 112:1

    قُلْ هُوَ ٱللَّهُ أَحَدٌ

    Qul hu-wal-lā-hu a-ḥad

Say: He is Allah, One and unique,

  2. Āyah 112:2

    ٱللَّهُ ٱلصَّمَدُ

    Al-lā-huṣ-ṣa-mad

Allah, the Master to whom all turn in their needs.

Al-Ṣamad has several classical explanations. Al-Ṭabarī prefers its meaning in Arabic usage: the master whom people turn to, with no one above him. Others explain it as the One who needs nothing (who neither eats nor drinks) or the One who remains after His creation; Ibn Kathīr reports al-Ṭabarānī saying that all of these are correct.1,2

  3. Āyah 112:3

    لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ

    Lam ya-lid wa lam yū-lad

He has not fathered a child, nor was He born,

  4. Āyah 112:4

    وَلَمْ يَكُن لَّهُۥ كُفُوًا أَحَدٌۢ

    Wa lam ya-kul-la-hū ku-fu-wan a-ḥad

and there has never been anyone equal to Him.

When it is recited

The Prophet ﷺ said that this short sūrah is equal to a third of the Qurʾān (Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 5013; Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 811). He recited it with al-Kāfirūn in the two short rakʿahs before Fajr (Muslim 726). Each night before sleeping he recited it with al-Falaq and al-Nās, blew lightly into his cupped hands and wiped them over as much of his body as he could, three times (al-Bukhārī 5017). He taught reciting it with al-Falaq and al-Nās three times in the evening and in the morning, saying they would be enough for you against everything (Sunan Abī Dāwūd 5082, graded ḥasan by al-Albānī; Jāmiʿ al-Tirmidhī 3575, which al-Tirmidhī graded ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ gharīb). And when a Companion who led prayers kept closing his recitation with it, because it describes the Most Merciful and he loved it, the Prophet ﷺ said, “Tell him that Allah loves him” (al-Bukhārī 7375).3,4,5,6,7,8,9
